Community Gardening

This summer, we’ve done a lot of planning for ways to grow our own fruits and veggies and taken many steps toward becoming much more self-sustaining. Our housemates have a large vegetable garden in the back and although they have offered for us to partake of the veggies/fruits grown therein, I didn’t feel up to doing that much gardening just yet … I don’t really know much about it and when the planning was happening, I didn’t feel up to helping even with that, since it was at a rough Gwen-time.

On the advice of my brother-in-law, Dave, we decided to dig up the aggresive ground cover in the front garden and open up a mini-plot for some squash. I figure I’ll have a hard time killing squash!

This past weekend, we planted five trees: two cherry, two pear, and one spruce. This cherry tree got the honour of being planted right outside our kitchen window (sadly, I forgot about my poor frozen placenta and planting it underneath!). This window is HUGE and there’s nothing covering it, so everyboy who walks by can wave at us in there doing our thing. This lovely Bing Cherry tree will give us both delicious fruit and a bit of privacy!

This cherry tree is outside Dave & Crystle’s window for the same reasons! I didn’t yet take pictures of the two pears and the spruce because they’re a bit hazardous to get to with a baby on your back, which was where Gwen was while I watered the cherry trees and took pictures!

(Here I’m wearing Gwen in my BabyHawk Mei Tai. Best. Carrier. Ever.)

And last but certainly not least, a shot of our wonderful rain barrels. Crystle and I went to a barrel-making workshop hosted by this guy last year when I was about 38 weeks pregnant. We made two barrels and Crystle was able to get them set up earlier this spring. I highly recommend them - what a fantastic purchase! We’re hoping to buy a few more this year to maximize our use of rain water.

I planted a cherry tree a couple years ago and forgot about my daughter’s placenta too. Ack! Now I have two in my freezer with “Mel’s Placenta - DO NOT EAT!” written on the plastic freezer bags they are in.
Love your rain barrles. I have always wanted one too. One day I will learn how to make my own as well.

Tammy - done and done! :)

Melodie - I totally meant to plant it under the tree going under our kitchen window so I could remember it often. Alas, it will stay in the creepy ice cream container :) Rain barrels are GREAT!

I just found out where Andrew put Rhys’ placenta. That explains why that portion of the garden is so, um, rich looking. In my fresh post pardum state after I had Rhys I woke up in a sudden start about a week after he was born. I frantically asked Andrew if he had forgotten about the placenta in the bag in the garage. I had visions of this nasty green thing stinking up the garage. He had taken care of it.

Tell me, how do you get Gwen in the back carry? I always had trouble with that. I would end up with Nadia on my head and her giggling uncontrollably. It did not work.

I’ll have to get hubby to take a series of pics of me getting her on my back - much easier to describe in pics than in words!
