Photo Shoot

I thought it would be fun to let Gwen hang around sans diaper (that’s without a diaper for you Americans!) and take some cute photos of her. She LOVES playing with her diaper off (more movement?) and, of course, is adorable. I managed to get some good ones! Read the rest of this entry »

MmmMmm … delicious toes …

Gwen is officially flexible.

This morning she literally pulled herself over from a semi-recline to eat her own toes.

Hi Mom!

Hi Mom!

We have yet to discover what exactly is so delicious about them that one must try so hard to eat them!

Yum!

Yum!

See her gripping the edge of the chair? What a determined child.

She also tries to shove them in her mouth the second her diaper comes off. I love my baby!

The New Plan

So, I stuck with that other Bible reading plan for a couple weeks … it petered out. I have a super hard time sticking with a plan in which I’m only reading from the Old Testament every day! While I definitely think it’s important to read the history of my faith … let’s get honest, it’s not so captivating. Some of the books are … less than exciting. I also find it really hard to make connections between the OT and my life. So, I found the M’Cheyne Bible Reading Plan. Here’s two of my favourite advantages of this plan, as taken from the outline:

THE WHOLE BIBLE WILL BE READ THROUGH IN AN ORDERLY MANNER IN THE COURSE OF A YEAR. - The Old Testament once, the New Testament and Psalms twice. I fear many of you never read the whole Bible, and yet it is all equally divine. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction and instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect.” If we pass over some parts of Scripture we will be incomplete Christians.

TIME WILL NOT BE WASTED IN CHOOSING WHAT PORTIONS TO READ. - Often believers are at a loss to determine towards which part of the mountains of spices they should bend their steps. Here the question will be solved at once in a very simple manner.

I love having a New Testament reading and a reading from Psalms every day. It’s a lot of reading. It’s 4 - 5 chapters a day: two from the OT (from different books), one or two from Psalms, and one from the NT. Surprisingly, I’m finding it easier to complete this plan than the old one I was doing which was two consecutive OT chapters. I’m happy that I’ve found a plan that works for me and will actually get me through the Bible … because I’m definitely feeling incomplete!

Wuhoo! Blog love!

Yay!! Stacy nominated me for the “Love Your Blog Award”. I feel priviledged! She said “She has an adorable baby girl, and writes about all sorts of interesting things. She’s also more descriptive than I am.” Thanks, Stacy!

Apparently I’m now supposed to give the award to seven people.

  1. Chelsea - although her blog is currently un-named, I love reading about her life and her daughter … who happens to share Gwen’s birthday a year ahead!
  2. Jenny - tales from our crib is a blog about my nephew =) ‘Nuff said!
  3. Julie-Anne - Fruitful Vines & Olive Shoots is a fantastic blog about trusting in God through our childbearing years
  4. Kathryn - Just Me is a blog about her life … she’s quite thrify and crafty, and I envy her mad skillz =) (lol … I really just wanted to write mad skillz … although I truly do admire her!)
  5. Jon - Stuff Christians Like makes me howl. Every day.
  6. Christine - welcome to my brain is a blog about her life and the life of her family. She is incredibly insightful and I love reading her posts - they make me think!
  7. Nicole - Bellies and Babies is written by Nicole, a childbirth educator and doula. I LOOOOVE reading her posts, since I’m a bit of a birth blog junkie.

So there you are … these are a few of the blogs in my blogroll that I hope are updated every time I open up my Google Reader =) Now to visit them all and let them know they’ve got an award …

Check it out!

A pic that one of my midwives took of the first time I breastfed Gwen is featured today on welcome to my brain’s Magical Milk Pic-O-The-Week! This is one of my favourite blogs to read, and I’m happy to have contributed to some breastfeeding awareness =) (Disclaimer: you can see some breast, so don’t check it out if you’re gonna be weirded out by it!)

For the love of breastfeeding …

My Google Reader is largely populated by blogs about pregnancy and childbirth - many of the writers being midwives and doulas. Because of this, I have been made aware that the Newman Breastfeeding Clinic and Institute (NCBI) has lost it’s government funding and will be closing (along with it’s information-filled website, drjacknewman.com) if it does not receive funding from public partners. Please check out this news article for more information.

I’m planning to donate through the Canadian Breastfeeding Foundation (I didn’t even know we had one of those! And I want to be an IBCLC … *shakes head*) and I’m hoping that all of my readers will consider making a donation as well. According to the article above, Dr. Jack’s clinic helps more than 2500 mothers a year learn to breastfeed and overcome breastfeeding difficulties. Let’s work as a team to keep this incredible resource open for all mothers and babies!!

Things are a-changin’!

Yesterday was bitter-sweet. Gwen wore her first 3 - 6 month sleeper! I’m ashamed to say that I probably should have got them out a bit sooner, but I thought the 0 - 3 were fitting fine … until I saw her in the 3 - 6 one. Oops! You mean they’re supposed to be able to straighten their legs?

The second big change is that we found a new home for our kitties. Grissom and Lily were just not getting the time, attention and affection they needed, so we found a loving home for them. I’ve gotta say, it’s nice to not have to check the stairs before I walk down them for either cat or hairball, and it’s super nice to not have to brush the couch before sitting on it. I do miss them a bit, though.

Gwen and I went to Babytime at our local library branch this afternoon. Mostly she was terrified! =)

The other camp.

As I was reading through my Google Reader today (I have 42 blogs on my reader! 42! Wait … isn’t that the answer to the meaning of life, the universe, and everything?) I came across an entry from one of my favourite bloggers, Julie-Anne. This stuck out at me:

But, there is a process a woman goes through in postpartum which can fall into the second camp. This camp believes that postpartum blues can be a part of the normal adjustment to life with a new baby and the process of grief as the family dynamics change. A postpartum mom is also not immune to outside stressors. These can affect your journey as well. (Please check out the post - titled The Postpartum Rainbow - to read the rest of it!)

I needed to hear these words! Sometimes I truly believe I am suffering from postpartum depression. Most of the time, though, I believe I’m making a transition into becoming a mom;  a transition that is difficult for all, but which has been made all the more difficult by my early postpartum days (Gwen’s weight loss and supplementing regime and my thrombophlebitis), our ongoing breastfeeding struggles (oversupply, a very forceful letdown, and a lot of leaking … although I think these things are finally starting to even out!), a colicky baby, significant extended family crises, as well as the fact that we are still not completely moved in and set up … 6 months after moving!

Posts like Julie-Anne’s make me feel like I’m not alone. That I’m normal for feeling disillusioned. Oh how I needed to hear those words!

That’s my husband!

“I feel bad spending so much money eating out,” I said to Brad the other day.

What did he reply?

“Well, I feel bad starving.”
